Forgotten Eagles® Ride Around Michigan (RAM) and Freedom Ride
Forgotten Eagles® came together six years ago as a group of concerned citizens with a common desire to ensure our nation does not set aside the needs of veterans and their families. One of the largest contributors to the Michigan Veterans' Trust Fund with a four year contribution of $52,500, it appears that they are meeting their goal.
Every dollar raised by this group stays right here in Michigan, to assist with the needs of veterans and their families.
Ride Around Michigan (RAM) is a three-day tour with each chapter within Forgotten Eagles® riding to veteran memorials within their coverage area. This covers all of Michigan's 83 counties including the Upper Peninsula.
The Freedom Ride, done in conjunction with the annual Ride Around Michigan (RAM) is dedicated to our fallen brothers and sisters and the POW/MIA's. The ride begins at the Loyal Riders Club house just south of Houghton Lake. Police escorted down US 127 to the C&S Harley Davidson in Mt. Pleasant where more riders are picked up and then continues from there to the Michigan Vietnam Memorial at Island Park in Mt. Pleasant.
As we formed our line and took our directions that Saturday morning under gray skies, the rain began to fall. Not long after we followed our escort onto US 127, it began to fall with a vengeance. Amazed at the dedication of this group to continue this ride, I reflected on the discomfort those that we were riding in memory of may have experienced, and thought better of complaining. With stinging rain, and I believe a little hail, the group continued on their journey south to C&S Harley Davidson. More riders joined up and our final destination was reached in time for an announcement that a tornado had been spotted not far from Mt. Pleasant. Again, this group of dedicated people, stood their ground and began the ceremonies.
With a lovely performance of our national anthem, speakers from Forgotten Eagles®?, retired military personnel and Brigadier General Fausone, the dedication of this group was impressive to say the least. Pouring rain, the announcement of a nearby tornado, thunder booming in the background, and the microphone crackling, approximately 150 people that began this journey from Houghton Lake to show their respect and support for not just Michigan veterans, but all veterans, stood fast, heads bowed in a moment of silence for those that have given their lives, those that are still missing, and those currently serving this great country that we call HOME.
The journey doesn't end there. The need to help veterans continues. The need to account for the POW/MIA's is still there. The need to support our troops currently serving will continue until all are home.
